Indee Late Model Open

By JIM NELSON, Courier Sports Writer

INDEPENDENCE -- It was kind of like Survivor, but without having to watch a naked Richard Hatch.

Damp conditions at the Independence Motor Speedway wouldn't allow the 1/3-mile oval to get firm, and it made for rough racing conditions Monday in the second round of the Indee Late Model Open series.

Bobby Moyer of Dubuque made his first trip to IMS memorable, topping the 22-car field and earning the $1,500 first-place check.

Only 10 cars were left running at the end of the race, shortened from 50 laps to 30 because of the track conditions.

Moyer combined some good fortune and a nice move late to get around Dale Hackwell Jr. of Washburn and cross the finish line first.

With seven laps remaining, leaders Dave Thorsten of Decorah and Scott Megonigle of Cedar Rapids both broke. Megonigle lost a wheel along the backstretch, while Thorsten pulled up lame after the yellow flag dropped.

"I was kind of just biding my time," said Moyer. "Every once in a while you'd see somebody break, and I'd move one spot closer to the front. Eventually I got to the front, and the opportunity to move to the front opened up.

"Once I got around the (Hackwell), I just tried to be smooth and, luckily, I got to the finish line unscathed."

On the restart, Hackwell had the inside lane and led until lap 24. However, Moyer got underneath him heading into turn one on lap 25 and led the rest of the way.

Bobby Hansen of Center Point passed Hackwell at the end for second, while Hackwell, J.D. Auringer of Evansdale, Tyler Bruening of Decorah rounded out the top five.

"I tried to stay low," said Hackwell of the final seven laps. "But (Moyer) was too fast on the bottom. I had to slow down low because the car was pushing too much. I moved up just a hair bit, and he got under me."

Moyer started the race inside of row six.

Dale Stolte led early before Megonigle took the lead. Thorsten took over the lead on lap 10 and appeared to be running away with the race before his front end broke on lap 23 during the yellow flag.

A daring move by Steve Wetter of Platteville, Wis., stole the Modified class. Wetter ducked to the inside of polesitter Ron Barker of Dubuque coming out of turn four on the last lap to edge Barker by a bumper.

Barker led 20 of the 25 laps, including the 14 of the final 15 before Wetter's sensational last-second move.

Joey Schaefer of Waterloo, Kevin Pittman of Waterloo and Jason Schueller of Dubuque rounded out the top five.

Ken Irvine of Oelwein won the Stock Car division and Chad Koch of Marshalltown took the checkers in the Hobby Stocks.
